File Extensions

You can specify the file extensions to be used when recording from a TV or Radio Station, and this will decide the information that goes into the file:

For TV:

.mpg - Both Video and Audio are recorded
.m2v - Only Video is recorded
.mp2 - Only Audio is recorded

For Radio:

.mpg - Only Audio is recorded
.mp2 - Only Audio is recorded

Recorded File Name

If you check the 'Add Date' option box, DigiTV will automatically add the creation date on to the end of the filename used when making a recording by either OTR (One Touch Recording) or Timer methods.

Likewise if you check the 'Add Time' option box, DigiTV will automatically add the creation time on to the end of each of your recording filenames.

Lastly this option allows you to specify the exact format the date and time should appear as.

Record Entire Transport Stream

For advanced users only. The Transport Stream is the raw data stream that contains all of the programmes on a single UHF channel. There can be as many as 8 separate programmes in each stream and so recording it will consume disk space very quickly.

Selecting this option means that if you start a recording, it will record the entire data stream present at the time rather than just the programme you're watching. This was especially useful with older versions of DigiTV as it allowed you to record multiple programs if they were being broadcast simultaneously on the same multiplex, e.g. if you wanted to record both BBC1 and BBC2 at the same time.

However, this option is no longer the best way to achieve this particular aim as v3.5 offers true simultaneous recording capabilities. It is therefore now possible to schedule timers (or perform one touch recordings) to record multiple channels from the same multiplex, thereby making multiple individual recording files for each timer you set. You can even set multiple recordings on different multiplexes, if you have enough additional DigiTV tuners attached, and therefore for full details of this new functionality please see our main 'Multi-tuner' section.

There are still times when you do want to record the full transport stream and thus this option has been left in for advanced users.

You can play back the transport stream in DigiTV exactly as if it was being broadcast at that moment in time by opening the file from the Media Player window.

Once playing, you can select any channel present in the stream using the normal channel selecting method. You can even record a programme from the stream in the normal way!

Aside from DigiTV, there are currently very few other players capable of playing back a single programme from a transport stream, but one very good one is the Elecard Player. A free trial version is available from http://www.elecard.com.

This option is always set to Off when DigiTV starts to prevent its accidental operation.

Recorded File Attributes

These options allow you to specify if you would like subtitle and/or audio description data to be included in your recorded files, if these streams are being transmitted. The default is set to not include subtitle or audio description data, but this can be easily changed as you require.

Additionally, we offer you the option to specify a maximum file size for each recording, which therefore causes your recordings to be automatically split when this size is reached. This option is off by default.

Recording Format

This option was added to DigiTV to allow you to choose whether or not DigiTV makes it's files by simply recording exactly the data that was originally broadcast, or whether or not DigiTV should attempt to adjust the incoming data to make the recorded file compatible with the majority of third-party DVD authoring programs.

Original broadcast format files will playback exactly the same in DigiTV as a DVD compatible format recording, but they can playback incorrectly in some third party players. DVD compatible format recordings should playback correctly in both DigiTV and the majority of third party authoring tools/players, and if you are mainly aiming to create full DVDs from your recordings then this is the option for you.

It should be noted though that subtitle and audio description data will work perfectly in DigiTV when recorded in Original broadcast format, but may not in DVD authoring compatible mode. For this reason, please use Original broadcast format if you are intending to store subtitle and audio description data in your recorded files.

It should also be noted that if you do make a recording in original broadcast format, but then wish to import it in to a DVD authoring package, then this is easily possible using the 'Original broadcast format' to 'DVD authoring tool compatible' format converter we provide in our Tools section.
