Parental Control

If you are letting your children use DigiTV, perhaps as a television in their own room, you may want to restrict access to certain channels or prevent viewing past certain hours.

DigiTV allows you to perform both of these functions and protects against a child's interference by giving you the ability to password-protect their use.

Passwords are encrypted using a sophisticated algorithm and stored in the system registry. DigiTV continually monitors this part of the registry for signs of tampering, and informs you if tampering has been detected. DigiTV will not allow your child to watch television if they have tampered with the registry until you enter your password to reset the system.

Changing the Password

Using the Parental menu, select the Change Password item.

When the Change Password dialog box appears you should enter the factory default password (1234) in the Old Password box.

This will enable the remaining controls in the box and allow you to choose a new password.

You must enter the same password in the Confirm box and click OK for the change to take effect. Note that passwords are case-sensitive.

If the Confirm password is not exactly the same as the new password, the OK button will not be enabled.

Enabling/Disabling the Channels

Using the Parental menu, select the Enable/Disable Channels item and a dialog box similar to the one on the left will appear.

When the dialog box appears, you need to enter your Password before any of the controls can be accessed.

You'll be able to see a list of all channels currently accessible for viewing. If you want to disable any channels, uncheck the box next to the channel name. This will prevent the channel appearing in any of the TV/Radio selection menus, including those that provide a programme description.

In effect, it will look like the channel is not there. To re-enable a channel, use the same dialog box to put a tick next to the channel name.

Restricting Viewing times

To restrict TV viewing times, you use the same dialog box as above, and enter the time range within which DigiTV will operate (using a 12 hour clock and specifying either AM or PM). If an attempt to watch TV is made outside of this time range, a message similar to the following will appear:

and DigiTV will refuse to show pictures or sound. This timing mechanism is not dependent on the current computer time, so changing it will have no effect. The time used is that broadcast by the channel operator.

When you've finished making your updates, click the OK button and the changes will be saved.
